If CB radio is like a tricycle, ham radio is like a Porsche. You can go farther, use more power, go more places, and have more fun, but you need a license. CB radio lets you use 4 watts of power, ham radio lets you use 1500! With ham radio, you can build your own equipment, talk to foreign countries, talk to satellites, and use digital modes. You can even send a TV signal with Amateur Television. On CB you just talk to people. It is a lot easier nowadays to get a ham radio license then it was when it first started. go to http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl and you can take practice license exams.

I agree with Meshugga.
In the ultimate simplest of terms – cb is good for having long talks with mates , and ham radio is good for building and electronics experimentation.
The talking part is generally the smaller portion of the hobby.
Being a ham is highly regulated where CB is more or less a free for all.

NO.
Amateur (HAM) radio covers from 160 meters to microwave; 1500 watts max; requires a license; and is defined by international treaty and in the USA by FCC part 97 regs. And you can legally build your own equptment.
CB (in the USA) is 11 meters only, 4 watts max AM, 12 watts max SSB, and is defined by FCC part 95 regs. Only FCC approved equiptment can legally be used.
CB radio is more or less line of sight. You can get 3 to 5 miles on a standard unit that has not been tweeked or really modified.
Ham at one time required a special permit to use due the adjustment and power output. Many new Ham sets can not be adjusted and anyone can buy these and use them. Althought to have a Ham operators code you still need to pass the test so that you can “talk” over the airwaves instead of just listen. 10 meter still uses morse code on the Ham circuits.
