Me and my boyfriend who live 15 miles apart thought of a "what if" situation... What if something happened in the world that didnt let us communicate through phone, internet, mail... Like some crazy signal malfunction that occured around the world... Help me out guys... Any walkie talkies that actually work in the city? Emergency radios? Idk what can we do if it happened?

That has scenario been thought of. Ham radio operators train for this possibility and will provide emergency communications in the event of disaster. They have local repeater stations on most of the larger hills that enable Handy Talkies to connect with each other on higher frequencies, while at the lower frequencies communications can be world wide under the right conditions without repeaters.

You could buy the Walkie talkies that they sell at sporting goods stores, but the range is usually way less than advertized due to ground obstructions to the line of sight. Additional power rarely helps, at the high frequencies radio waves travel line of sight. Therefore, the need for a network of repeater stations.

You can become a Ham operator with a little study, take the exam and get your operators license. Then buy a professional Handy Talkie and join you local Ham group's repeater network.
