In this video I discuss the basic steps on getting outdoors with VHF radio. I reflect on what I have learned journeying through the hobby with portable amateur radio.

I use a Yaesu FT857D, 9ah battery, Slim Jim antenna, coax, paper logbook, telescopic pole and a drive over mast. I have a backup radio in the car with spare leads, repair kit in the car. I use a similar setup when backpacking portable except a lighter battery.

I’m a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom.

Good stuff Carl, as always. Your enthusiasm is as ever through the roof ????.

I’ve been out this evening hunting round for an ‘high spot’ to act as net control for our North East 2m FM net and found a great spot (had to get away from usual one as the interference from mil data burst was crazy on 2 m). Anyway, we’re kicking it off this Saturday between 7-8pm on 145.425MHz, if you’re out and about then on a bit of high ground give it a go, don’t forget the 6m net on Sunday too, same time on 50.575MHz FM. If you want I can add you to the WhatsApp groups and also remind you on ‘Muddy Hills’ ??

Keep up the good work Carl……Paul ????

Outdoor radio is all I do.
    I don't have a home base.
Going into the nature gives radio legitimacy and purpose.

Enjoyed your videos and learn a lot thanks Carol. I think the word i am looking for is motivation, to get back on 2m. MM0MYL Myles.

Nice to see you out and about Carl, simple set up but seemed to do well. I find QSO's on 2m/70cm at times more challenging then HF as people seem reluctant to speak outside there usual familiar contact groups. 73s. hope the weather held up for the star gazing in the end.

Thanks Carl.. Enjoyed the vid… I'm a caravanner so need to get the radio going on my camping trips! As someone contemplating getting back into the hobby, I've been looking at the Yaesu 857 as a means of getting all bands in one box! Looks a great radio, would you buy it again if you were looking?

Good to see you taking a break from the rigors of the admin job. It looked slightly overwhelming…so kudos for getting outside with a radio before you suffered from burnout. ?

Couple of pieces of white plastic waste pipe telescoped inside one another is another simple 12-15 foot mast option. Cheers for the video.

Re: Your last comments, VHF and UHF both very quiet down here. Mad really, UHF is a particularly good band to enjoy. Always seems like the quality if the audio/signal is much higher than VHF. Looking forward to getting and out and up very soon!

Enjoyed this video a lot, Carl, a very nice location a great place to play radio. I agree with your philosophy that you can't take too much stuff, as I always say it is better to Tham have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Thanks for sharing Carl, keep it up!
