Is Ham Radio still a relevant hobby? Or, is Amateur Radio obsolete and dead now with the many different methods of communication available to us in 2019? In this video we explore how we can promote and reinvigorate our hobby.
No, ham radio isn't dead. Anyone who thinks its dead obviously never touched a radio lol
Come on everyone STOP making these videos and get on the air, it's the best way to promote the hobby. This is why Radio is dying and it's the Radio amateurs themselves making videos like this to get people to "Like", "Subscribe" and pile up there "Views". Video's like this are not helping the hobby. Come on get on the air, best way to support our hobby. I am there but alone.
I guess people refuse to face reality. The hobby is not dying its already dead. There is hardly any activity on the lower bands and the vhf uhf bands have been a waste land for years now. The old guys have mostly died off and the young guys just aren't that interested because of all the other options. Activity has really taken a nose dive over the past 18 years.
one only needs to look at the amateur radio dealers today ,compared with 20 years ago. There are almost none left.
A lady friend, when she found out I was a Ham told me this story. She took her 12 year old son to an amateur radio club because he was keen to get into the hobby. What she saw scared her silly. Expecting a place where there would be lots of radio gear and folks on air she was greeted by group of old men that looked like a bunch of alcoholics attending an AH meeting and there was not a radio in sight! Both her and her son were very disappointed. I explained that this is typical of every radio club I have been in, going back many years. Sad but true. Like the steam engine and horse drawn wagons, Ham radio is dead. Like it or not.
I might add, the only activity I have heard tonight in the last 6 hours is one fart on the local two meter repeater.
Best time ever to get into ham radio.
It's relevant today to those who still appreciate it, the problem is not too many are taking it up these days. I remember the 70s and 80s when CBs were all the rage and a lot got into AR from there and loved it passionately but nowadays it's sadly gone.
Earth is flat
Amateur radio was a fantastic time during the early 1980s up to mid 1990s I got my uk licence in 1983 and worked 2metre 70 cm 6 metres and had a fantastic time on oscar 13 satellite band but from around 1995 things changed , a all bands seemed to rapidly decrease in activity possibly due to mobile phones really not sure what happened but a very sad thing and I don't those glorious days of amateur radio will ever return 73 from ex G6XCE
Internet, cell.phone coverage can go down. The more avenues of communication the better. They can shut down cell coverage. More easily than ham radio.
Like it or not 11 meters has been and still could be the "gateway drug" to Amateur radio. The disdain from holier than thou hams combined with the large number of closeted hams who freeband……anyhow, If ham radio ever dries up and blows away, there will ALWAYS be a "QSO" on 27.385 LSB somewhere.
I find a hand held ham radio so much more convenient than a cellphone. Once its programmed. No need to click on an app to chat etc. Zello is nightmare.
I’m 26 and got my license a month ago. I made 3 contacts today from my bedroom and car with my new radio. Simplex is kinda a joke unless you’re out in the middle of nowhere and repeaters can cut you off randomly from communicating which is so annoying.
So what do you think? How can we encourage a younger generation to the hobby?
