A Ham’s Attempt At CB Radio

I am just not cut out for CB radio. I ain’t cool enough. I got two of these General Electric GE 3-5980A radios for a dollar each. Nice rig, but um… maybe citizen’s band ain’t my bag. People seem like they’re just yelling, and you don’t know who anybody is or where they are for sure. I can see why they are so oft maligned by actual licensed Ham Radio Operators. Oh, well.

    Look on the bright side….. you only have $2 in your rig, so, no great loss. ; )

    My homeboy in MN? I can't understand more than about half a word of that gibbering.

    This is why I'm not cut out for CB radio. Gimme the politeness of ham anyday.

    The first 10 seconds sound like someone just shouting breaker over and over.

    I have that same rig actually 2 of them but one just makes a loud buzzing sound when u turn it on. and both have no antennas. I modded mine into an amplified speaker. look for "modified 40 channel CB tranceiver GE-3-5980a" on youtube or in the related videos

    @KyleCulbertson Of course. There are legal limits, however to unlicensed Citizen's Band communications. I'm not sure what is possible within those parameters. If you become a licensed Ham Radio operator, worldwide communication is commonplace.

    @coondogtheman1234 I'm looking for that antenna 3-5890A

    If you have one and want to sell let me know.

    @massauto
    sorry I can't help you there. when I got mine they had no antennas and only one of them worked. so I did what I did to mine.

    CB has plenty of polite people though. Im guessing you were listening to channel 6 there. Guys running more than 10,000 watts are not uncommon on that channel believe it or not. So a handheld walkie isnt going to be heard.

    CB is a mix of good and bad. Ive stumbled upon the good on sideband. Some very nice people out there.

    Take care.

    That's why it's hard to talk when skip is coming in on CB. If you found a local channel while skip wasn't rolling, it would be pretty different.

    Out of curiosity, what channel were you on? 6? I can't tell in the video.

    That's the "superbowl." It's a bunch of dudes all over who have linear amps and whatnot and are pushing out 100-1000 Watts (as opposed to the legal 4W). CB isn't very popular, I got into it at 13 (I'm early 30s now) and I fell out of the game for about 10 years, and I'm just recently getting into it. It's amazing how even over the past decade it's dropped off. If you're near a freeway, truckers (and others) usually talk on channel 19. There's some old guys close to me who talk back and forth on channel 15. Some legit people are still out there. That's just the superbowl. Were you on channel 6?

    This kind of lingo spoken on the "Citizen's Band" only comes naturally to males suffering fetal-alcohol syndrome.  I think it may be acquired however, if you sustain numerous CT scans of the cranium in a short time but we don't have enough cases to state with statistical certainty.

    Going to have to do better than a $2 hanheld if you wanna get heard on channel 6 when conditions are in!
    I'll gestimate that you were only being heard for under a mile.
    If you had the telescopic antenna version you could do 2-3 miles and maybe 5 miles if you climb a tree! You would still need to find a quieter channel to talk to a local.

    That's Super Bowl 6, you need who's on a local channel without so much hash.
