Question by TempusFugit: How do I become a “ham” radio operator?
I have wanted to become a ham radio operator for some time now, but everytime I start doing the research on what I need in the way of equipment and licensing, I get overwhelmed. Can anyone help me get started? What license forms do I need? What equipment should I get? What do I need to know about amature radio?

Give your answer to this question below!
First off ,. go find a near by ham radio club and go to one of their meetings and ask one of the guys there for assistance to become certified.
If you don’t have any electronics experience then likely you will start at the lowest class first., but you can always upgrade later as your skills and desires improve.
You will have to study for a test , but the lowest class it is super easy., (especially in the US)
Remember that your license is obtained not because you payed a fee , but because you achieved a level of education approved by the government and accepted internationally.
It is an achievement to get a license and something to be cherished and treated with respect.
Your equipment that you will buy will depend on a few factors , your class of license first and fore-mostly , followed by your budget.
You do not need to be rich to get a ham station on the air , or super smart either. 🙂
My website might help you understand a few basics of radio and electronics.

Contact the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). ARRL is the national membership organization of amateur radio. The ARRL has been in existence since the very first days of radio. I believe it was incorporated in about 1912.
ARRL offers good and valuable advice on all aspects of amateur radio and it would be well worth your time to check the web site:

(I’ve been a ham for 46 years)
I have been a ham radio operator for many years.
I have some links on my CQ VoIP Call web site to some ham radio resources. (See my profile for the link… then find the “about the editor” page and then the “Why CQ” page.)
